Neighborhood Swim/Bike: 700ft of climbing, 7miles,...
I’ve been waiting to do this workout since I started training. The club pool is just up the hill from us, a 3 minute drive. There are also literally miles of trails and backroads within a half mile of my front door, but between my front door and the trails is a steep mile of climbing. The workout I’ve been waiting to do is to bike to the club, swim a mile at the club, and then bike...

1.5 Miles in the Pool
I did my first mile and half pool workout. A big part of swimming is developing an efficient gliding stroke. That is, for each stroke actually riding the glide. It’s pretty exciting because I’m getting there. The 2600 yard workout isn’t killing me either! To see what a gliding stroke looks like, check out Michael Phelps’ stroke. See how one arm is always out in front of...

Labor Day training in Lake Tahoe
We spent the Labor Day holiday at Camp Jameson Beach in South Lake Tahoe with three other families from the neighborhood. In addition to much chLake Tahoe, while not as salty or rough as the San Francisco Bay, is cold enough to warrant a wet suit when swimming long distances. I loved swimming in the Lake. The water is clear with a coarse sandy bottom. Swimming in the wet-suit made me more buoyant,...

Saturday Workout | Forty Minutes of Hills | 45...
Today was a Run/Swim Brick, but all in all a great workout. We ran two hill loops near Campolindo, ~ 20 minutes each. As always I started out creaky, but once I loosened up I could really enjoy the run. We swam yards upon yards waiting to be video-taped to analyze our stroke, swim technique. It was pretty sweet. Once I saw the video, I could pretty quickly note that I need to work on my body...

1400 yards, next up Level 2, ~ 2000 yards
I swam 1400 yards today. During my next swim workout I’m going to do the Level II workout which means ~2000 yards. My first workout where I swim more than a mile. Posted via web from Triathlonious | Comment »

Mondays are Rest Days | Necessary but hard (for...
Mondays are our day off from training. This might sound easy. But it’s actually fairly tough at this point in training.  I want to go swimming or ride my bike. But I need to rebuild, let the muscles and glycogen stores recover. Help me help someone with blood cancer by sponsoring me training efforts with team in training.   Posted via web from Triathlonious | Comment »

Berkeley Marina: First 50 minute run in a while
I did my first 50 minute run in a long while at the Berkeley Marina today. Rochele and I have run here many times during our marathon training. The run felt awesome! I could’ve gone a lot longer. The cross-training is really getting me into shape fast and sparing me the wear and tear I typically feel when just running.  Posted via web from Triathlonious | Comment »

Another Wednesday Run Bike Brick with a Twist
This Wednesday was a fast brick workout. Our circuit was: Cycle for 20 minutes 15 pushups  15 Crunches 15 Squats Run for 15 minutes Repeated 2-3 times depending on how fast we were. I’m actually getting to the point where this isn’t exhausting. Certainly nowhere as exhausting as chemotherapy. Posted via web from Triathlonious | Comment »

OK. I’m slow. I ran two miles in 17:25. But honestly, it’s the fastest two miles I’ve ran in a long time. I typically run trails at a 9-10 minute/mile pace.Time to pick it up a bit. :)  Posted via email from Triathlonious | Comment »

Phys Ed: Can Running Actually Help Your Knees? -...
via well.blogs.nytimes.com I believe running does help your knees - in addition to many other things. As Earl Pratt used to say, “the moment you sent down in that chair to retire it’s over with”. We’re just bone-machines. To maintain them, you must use them, hard. Caveman running after prey hard. Posted via web from Triathlonious | Comment »

Relaxing through the distances.
It was a pretty epic morning in the pool. The pool wasn’t crowded. There wasn’t some crabby swimmer guy upset that I was about to jump into his lane. There weather was good. I had my coffee on. I was a competitive swimmer in elementary and high school; one of the best breaststrokers in our district. I’m not even going to comment on what you’re thinking. Anyway, swimming...

First Brick Workout | Bike/Run
We did our first brick workout today. Our brick was a combination of Biking and Run. We’d ride our bikes for 15 minutes and then get off our bikes and run for 5 minutes. We repeated this three times without stopping. It made for a fun game and made clear that I’m going to have to get some speed laces for a quick transition from the bike to run segments of the triathlon. The pace of...

working out six days a week
So I’ve taken three years off from training and running. I’ve missed it, but I’ve been busy with work, family and the house. The things I’ve forgotten are  How hungry I can get after working out. How crabby I can get after working out. How working out, propels you to work out more. Posted via web from Triathlonious | Comment »

Fish flies out of lake, breaks Arkansas teen’s jaw Sep 07, 2008 (09-07) 17:26 PDT Little Rock, Ark. (AP) — It’s a fishing tale that packs a wallop so strong it broke the jaw of a southeastern Arkansas teen and covered him in fish blood and guts. Seth Russell, 15, of Crossett, was cruising Lake Chicot on a large inner tube towed by a boat when a Silver Asian carp leaped...
